You know, their face and name may encourage us to associate them with the land horses as we all know but in terms of strength, they're like heaven and earth. Heck, seahorses are even more fragile than they actually look. Lots of them are always found dead after storm because they always get caught in strong underwater currents. Now you know why in many animal documentaries, seahorses are often found hooking their tail onto a seaweed or coral reef, instead of floating around like other sea creatures.

Fun Facts about Seahorses

  • There are about 40 known species of seahorse. Seahorses prefer to swim in pairs with their tails linked together. They swim upright and avoid predators by mimicking the color of underwater plants.
  • Speaking of predators, they don’t have all that many. The bony seahorse doesn’t appeal to too many fish. They are, however, a favorite meal of the crab. Humans are a threat as well, who harvest them faster than they can reproduce, mostly for sale to aquariums or in souvenir shops.
  • The way seahorses reproduce is very different from how the vast majority of other species procreate. When they’re ready to mate, the female seahorse will deposit her eggs into the male’s pouch, which is found in his abdomen. She can leave up to 50 eggs there. It’s up to the male to carry those eggs until they’re ready to be born.
  • Seahorses propel themselves by using a small fin on their back that flutters up to 35 times per second. Even smaller pectoral fins located near the back of the head are used for steering. Because of their body shape, seahorses are rather inept swimmers and can easily die of exhaustion when caught in storm-roiled seas.
  • Seahorses may not look anything like your typical fish, but they actually are classified as fish. Characteristics that make them fish include a swim bladder to control buoyancy, gills to breathe, and fins to propel them through the water.
  • They anchor themselves with their prehensile tails to sea grasses and corals, using their elongated snouts to suck in plankton and small crustaceans that drift by. The seahorse can suck up food from as far as 3cm away. The seahorse feeds constantly on plankton and tiny fish. It moves each of its eyes independently, so it can follow the activity of passing sea life without giving its presence away.
  • Seahorses find a companion that they’ll stay with for life. They’re monogamous creatures, meaning they only mate with one other seahorse for their entire lives. Their unique courtship includes dancing with one another, displaying a variety of colors, swimming alongside one another, and spinning around each other. This can last up to 8 hours.
